LOCAL AND FOREIGN PARTNERSHIPS RESULTS IN A

NEW LEASE ON LIFE FOR ONE SPECIAL LITTLE GIRL!
________________________________________________

When entities come together for a good cause the results can be life changing. A joint venture that stretched across country borders and involved public and private partnership, enabled a seven-year-old girl to receive crucial, limb-saving surgery, giving her another chance at life.
Tenia Cash, a bright and friendly, seven year old little girl who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in November 2009 received much needed surgery performed by a team of local and international doctors. Doctors Hospital’s noted orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Valentine S. Grimes and Florida surgeon Dr. B. Hudson Berrey worked arduously on Tenia's case.

What made this case so special was the outpouring of support displayed by both Dr. Berrey and Dr. Grimes, who donated their expertise to the Cash family and the generosity of Doctors Hospital who made its surgical facilities and intensive care unit available at no cost. Dr. Grimes also sponsored Dr. Berrey's visit to the Bahamas to assist with performing the surgery.

The surgery was further made possible by the Royal Bank of Canada and RBC FINCO, which provided and accommodations for Dr. Berrey and his team through their Caribbean Children's Cancer Fund.

After learning of her daughter's diagnosis and the possibility that Tenia may need to have her leg amputated, Ms. Cash said she searched tirelessly for an alternative. She read of Dr. Berrey's previous surgery on another young girl with Tenia's disease. Ms. Cash made two trips to Florida with her family before meeting Dr. Berrey and requesting his services.

The mother of two said she is especially proud of the strength her daughter exhibited throughout the whole ordeal. "She's a fighter. She's a trooper. Her spirit alone is what really kept me going," said Ms. Cash, who also credited prayer and a strong support system for sustaining the family.

“This has been a long haul to get to this point” says Tenia’s grandmother, Mrs. Karen Musgrove, through tears. “Thanks to family, friends and donations from business person Tenia has a chance.”

Surgeons removed 15 centimeters of cancerous bone from Tenia's right knee, replacing it with a prosthesis capable of accommodating her future growth. All involved expressed pleasure at having worked together to make the surgery possible. Pediatric oncologist Dr. Corinne Sinquee, who administered chemotherapy to Tenia, called the effort a partnership in its truest sense.

With the establishment of its Caribbean Children's Cancer Fund in 2008, RBC sought to provide financial aid to children around the region under the age of 16 who have been diagnosed with cancer. Tenia is the first Bahamian child to receive aid, and one of three to have been assisted by the fund in the region. "On behalf of Tenia's family we'd just like to thank Dr. Berrey, Dr. Grimes, Dr. Sinquee and all the support from Doctors Hospital and RBC," said Javier Forbes, Tenia's father. "We'd also like to thank our families and friends because it was a lot of hard work in the beginning trying to get things started."

Through massive fundraising efforts, Tenia's family was able to purchase her prosthesis at a cost of $25,000. “This is an amazing and wonderful family, they were willing to do what it took, working hard to achieve this, so in looking at their tenacity, we could only turn around and do our best because of the efforts that they put forward”, stated Dr. Grimes. "It was excellent working with Ms Cash and her entire family. They have a can do spirit and never gave up."
