Nassau, The Bahamas – February 5, 2026 – Doctors Hospital Health System (DHHS) successfully completed the first procedure in its new catheterization lab today. This critical technology is designed to diagnose and treat serious heart and other vascular conditions, including heart attacks, by restoring blood flow quickly and safely. This capability enables physicians to intervene in life-threatening emergencies where every minute matters and lives can be saved.

The new cath lab is equipped with best-in-class imaging technology and software, including the Philips Azurion 5, and is located at Doctors Hospital’s Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited campus in Nassau, New Providence.

Following the approval of licensure and the initial activation of the system, the lab became operational immediately to meet an emergent patient need. The soft opening was marked by the first successful cardiac procedure, performed by Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Ran Eliaz.

“Our first procedure using the Philips Azurion 5 was a complete success, delivering exceptional imaging of the patient’s coronary arteries,” said Dr. Eliaz. “This technology significantly enhances precision and decision-making during complex cardiac procedures and expands our ability to deliver lifesaving care. It represents a major advancement in cardiovascular diagnostics and treatment at Doctors Hospital.”

“This investment by Doctors Hospital Health System provides lifesaving interventions for Bahamians,” said Dennis Deveaux, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Doctors Hospital Health System. “We intend to ensure this service is accessible by exploring public-private partnerships with the Government of The Bahamas to make this critical capacity available. More broadly, this represents an important step toward reducing morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease in The Bahamas.”

The new Catheterization Lab strengthens DHHS’s ability to diagnose and treat heart attacks and complex cardiovascular and vascular conditions, enabling procedures such as coronary artery stenting, pacemaker implantation, emergency angiography, and other vascular interventions.

“Reintroducing catheterization services is an important milestone for Doctors Hospital,” said Dr. James Iferenta, Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Executive Director of Doctors Hospital East. “With advanced technology and a highly trained clinical team, we are better positioned to deliver timely, high-quality cardiac care when patients need it most.”
