Doctors Hospital Health System Transitions Harbourside Hospital to Government of the Bahamas

Share

Nassau, Bahamas — On July 29, 2026, Doctors Hospital Health System (DHHS) completed the handover of Harbourside Hospital to the Government of The Bahamas (through the Public Hospitals Authority). The transition marks an important milestone in the longstanding public-private partnership between Doctors Hospital Health System and the Government of The Bahamas. The consideration for the sale of Harbourside Hospital was $29 million.

Reflecting on this journey, President Dr. Charles W. Diggiss shared:

“When Doctors Hospital Health System acquired the Harbourside facility in 2017, it did so with a bold vision: to expand healthcare capacity, increase the resources available throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and enhance the expertise accessible locally. While Doctors Hospital operates as a private healthcare provider, our purpose has always extended beyond our business model. Our mission has always been to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system by investing in people, infrastructure, and partnerships that improve access to high-quality care for all.”

Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, also reflected on the significance of the transition, stating:

“This new facility is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when bold government strategy meets private sector innovation.” He further noted, “The Government of The Bahamas gained a modern healthcare asset without the many years of construction typically required to deliver a facility of this scale.”

Doctors Hospital Health System remains committed to expanding healthcare capacity, introducing specialized services, and strengthening collaborations across the public and private sectors to improve access to high-quality healthcare throughout The Bahamas.
